MotoQ as an iPOD substitute

Early on with this device, I thought it’d be fun to see how well the MotoQ did masquerading as an iPOD. Surprisingly, it did VERY WELL… especially with the built-in stereo speakers. However, I quickly determined that loading even 4 or 5 mp4 files from iTunes on my PC slowed down the device in a very bad way. That’s why I went to eBay and ordered myself a 1Gb miniSD card on the cheap. Now, I have a great traveling music library. The only trick is to tell the Windows Media Player to look for files on the Memory Card… but it works quite well.

I’ve chosen not to use ActiveSync to keep the audio files synced between my MotoQ and my PC, for now. I find it’s pretty easy just to use a drag/drop interface on my PC to change things up when I want.

To play with the speaker settings, follow these instructions:

  • In the Start menu, find and click on Accessories
  • Find and click on Audio Enhancement > Phone Speaker
  • From this screen you can adjust the following speaker settings along a scale of 1-5:
    • Surround Sound (default 2)
    • Bass (default 4)
    • Clarity (default 3)

There is also a setting for headphones. I haven’t splurged for a set that fits the input, but my Sony earbud leftover from the Blackberry works fine, albeit not in stereo, for discreet listening. Personally, I think I’ll just hold out for the Motorola HT820 Stereo Headphones. Very cool!

  1. [...] Can the MotoQ be made to act as an iPOD for listening to music while you drive?  I set out this week to determine the answer… We don’t have a veritable plethora of iPOD accessories for our MotoQ just yet, but as more units are sold I suppose more vendors will adapt their product lines or develop custom solutions for this new phone/device. I, for one, did not want to wait until we had a way to leverage the MotoQ as an iPOD substitute (as previously blogged herein) when riding in my car. [...]

  2. [...] permalink Ever since I determined that I could use my MotoQ as an iPOD substitute I’ve pined for the ability to play the music via my car’s stereo speakers while driving. Not that the built-in speakers aren’t wonderful *indoors*, they’re not the best when my car’s convertible top is down. I started researching FM Transmitters using Google and didn’t get too excited. But, I’ve found that a device available from BestBuy allows me to successfully use my MotoQ as a mobile music jukebox for my car. Anyone else using an FM transmitter? What works? What doesn’t, for you?? MotoQuser // motoquser.com __________________ MotoQuser // motoquser.com [...]

  3. Congrats on your success. I’ve tried to download using the “normal” instructions from the Moto users guide with no positive result. Even the people at Motorola have no clue as to what to do. I’m waiting until after the weekend to get a response from a Moto “specialist.” The PC-based Windows Media Player does not recognise the device. Can you help?

  4. [...] Don’t expect Apple’s iTunes to work with the Motorola Q anytime soon, but THERE IS GOOD NEWS from the Microsoft front. If you download the new Microsoft Media Player version 11, then you will get the auto-sync features we’ve so desired with our MotoQ’s. ActiveSync isn’t even required as I’ve described before. The Microsoft download site describes the new feature… Play it, view it, organize it, or sync it to a portable device for enjoying on the go, or share with devices around your home—all from one place. 6. Alan & Ian… check out the instructions contained in my blog posting about the new Windows Media Player 11 at http://motoquser.com/2006/12/08/music-sync-between-your-motoq-pc/
